Talk about hypocrisy! If a state legislator was really concerned about money impacting politics in MA they’d be focusing their attention on Dark Money. A WBUR investigation exposed “One Commonwealth,” a 501(c)(4) nonprofit launched by allies of @maura_healey that allowed corporate donors to bypass the state’s $1,000 individual contribution limit. Known as 501(c)(4)s under the federal tax code, nonprofits like One Commonwealth are sometimes called dark money groups because they can raise unlimited money WITHOUT disclosing their donors. The groups cannot donate directly to candidates, but they can produce independent political ads, register voters, and donate to other groups, including super PACs. Ties to Healey’s Campaign: One Commonwealth raised $748,000 from undisclosed donors in its first year. The same person helping raise money for Healey’s campaign was also paid to solicit donors for One Commonwealth. Lynda Tocci, listed as the nonprofit’s president, worked as a senior advisor to Healey’s 2022 campaign. The group’s treasurer’s firm has been paid by both the nonprofit and Healey’s reelection campaign. AND HEALEY REFUSES TO DISCLOSE Healey and her aides have refused to name the contributors to One Commonwealth or call on the nonprofit to disclose them. In fact, Healey’s office declined to answer questions from WBUR about One Commonwealth. Also, DraftKings contributed $50,000 to Healey’s dark money group - donating $50,000. Make no mistake it’s essentially a black-box political fund. And the conflict of interest is direct and real. DraftKings funneled that $50,000 into the group while facing pending state legislation that could have more than doubled its tax rate. How about that? But this state legislator wants to stop @MikeMinogueABMD from donating his own hard-earned money to his own campaign? Give me a break. #mapoli #MaGov #MASen
